Ten Tremendous Years With Wal-Mart
1962-1972
The first Wal-Mart store opened its doors on July 1, 1962 with a total investment of $72,000 - $60,000 for merchandise, $12,000 for fixtures (including signs and cash registers) in a “giant sized” 16,000 foot store in Rogers, Arkansas!
From that beginning ten years ago this month, Wal-Mart has had continuous growth and success that has brought Wal-Mart a total of forty-eight stores. Nine of these have been opened in the past six months, with eight more scheduled for the balance of fiscal 1972. Thus, by the end of 1972, we will have in operation a total of fifty-seven stores in five states, ranging in size from our largest and recently opened 77,000 square foot store in Joplin, Missouri to our smallest 25,000 square foot store in Nashville, Arkansas.
It is rewarding to know that our efforts have produced such great results.
Wal-Mart’s spectacular growth pattern spells opportunity for all employees. In addition to producing more jobs, our growth has also nourished economic security for each employee and his family. This is one of the basic commitments in our Company philosophy.
This is an exciting time of growth and expansion for Wal-Mart. Being part of a Company that is providing opportunities now and for the future makes an experience with Wal-Mart exciting, rewarding and challenging.
We welcome the challenge!
